Alex was in a rotten mood, and I wasn’t even to blame. I’d woken to my alarm around noon—the first time that I could remember since becoming a vamp—and been ready to go when he swung by to pick me up an hour later.

My promptness hadn’t made a dent in his foul mood. And when I asked if everything was okay, he’d snapped at me—so we’d driven in silence.

He parked the car in the drive and ran his hand through his hair. “Sorry. I didn’t sleep well last night.” His gaze remained firmly fixed in the distance. “Nightmares.”

I could only imagine what kind of nightmares a man like Alex had. “I’m sorry. Have the spirits been bothering you?”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. “No.” He turned and looked at me. “I just wanted to tell you I’m sorry for letting it interfere with our work.”

“Hey, we’re here on time. No interference.”

“Right. You know what I mean.” He didn’t wait for me to respond, just exited the car.

I scrambled to catch up. A few steps before he reached the door, I said, “Do you have a plan?”

“Mostly just get a feel for both of them. I only know Rachael.” He rapped sharply on the door. “I’ve never met Ophelia, Mrs. Dyson. Like I said before, we don’t run in the same circles.”

I still didn’t understand how that could be possible. The Society seemed like a really small community.

The door opened to reveal Gladys. Or a woman that could have been Gladys’s twin. Tall, fiery red hair that was almost the exact shade of Gladys’s, perfect pale skin. Even the nose and shape of the eyes… Whoa.

The Gladys copy gave me a curious look then looked down at herself. “I’m sorry—not what you expected?”

I shut my gaping mouth.

Alex said, “You bear a striking resemblance to an acquaintance. Mallory isn’t normally so rude…or so silent.”

“Right, sorry.” I was so flustered that I stuck out my hand, temporarily forgetting that enhanced humans weren’t usually into handshakes.

I realized my mistake and was withdrawing my hand when Ophelia shook it. A firm, solid shake. Quite professional, in fact. Not what I expected from a shopaholic wearing a flowing dress that emphasized rather than hid all of her curves. But I also really needed to stop judging people based on their grip. Maybe also not on their appearance—though there usually were a few good tells in a person’s choice of clothing and hair style. Ophelia Dyson had beautiful taste and knew how to dress to make herself look even more gorgeous.

She gave me a sly smile. “Not a problem for golems. Ophelia Dyson. You’re here about my husband’s very inconvenient disappearance?” Withdrawing her hand, she opened the door wider, gesturing for us to come inside.

The creepy sense of being in the presence of Gladys-but-not-Gladys faded with each passing second. Gladys was many things, but not sly. And her manner was open and genuine, unlike the calculated perfection of Ophelia Dyson.

“Is there a particular reason that now is inconvenient?” Alex asked.
